Time Dispenser
Does our pursuit of productivity rob us of personal moments and our innate longing for more time?
PLAYFUL INTERACTIONS | INTERACTIVE INSTALLATION | REFLECTIVE
A clock that tells you the time only if you beg for it.
Design Process
The first challenge was trying to create a compact and well-designed interaction, to ensure that none of the hardware could be seen. The components that needed to be hidden were a Mac mini, mini projector and the circuit board (Arduino nano and distance sensor)
Overview
Built upon the notion that "Time is Money" and our lives are constantly evaluated based on productivity, this art installation offers a reflection on the ongoing struggle for more time in a world that often leaves little room for personal moments. It's a commentary on our collective desire for extra time—so, let's collectively beg for more time together!
Prototype
The second design challenge was ensuring that the projection would fall in the middle of the user’s hand. Therefore figuring out the exact placement of the distance sensor was crucial.

ITP Showcase
After testing and iterating, the final piece was presented at the ITP Winter Showcase with over 500 guests. It was interesting to see that, despite the absence of explicit signs, some participants chose to kneel to interact with the piece.
As a final interaction, reflecting on the piece and the notion of never having enough time, I asked participants to write down what they would do if they had more time.
